Taiwan review #6: Wulai
Wulai is a tourist town most renowned for its hot springs, sightseeing, and aboriginal culture.
Other activities include hiking, camping, swimming, fishing, and birdwatching. During the spring, visitors come see the sakura trees bloom.
Among the attractions are:
1) Wulai hot springs --> There's numerous hot spring hotels, public baths, as well as the Wulai river.
2) Wulai Atayal Museum --> Entrance is free. But personally I feel that's it's a bit boring (I may be bias. Most musuems bore me!)
3) Waterfalls --> Several waterfalls exist in the Wulai gorge, but the largest is Wulai Falls. Nothing to shout about. We have far nicer waterfalls in Malaysia.
4) Wulai Gondola --> the gondola takes visitors to the top of Wulai Falls, where it accesses a hotel, conference center, and the Yunxian playground (a nature park with gardens, paddle boats, natural trails, and natural obstacle courses). We gave this a miss so can't comment much on this.
5) Atayal aboriginal culture --> many shops in Wulai specialize in aboriginal foods, arts, crafts, and clothing. During our visits, the shops does not impress us much.
6) Wulai Scenic Train - this is a converted mine train built during the Japanese era that takes visitors from downtown Wulai to the attractions at the base of Wulai Falls. This train covers 1.6 km from start to end, and it's a pretty short ride. Fare is NTD50 per way.
Verdict: If you have limited time in Taiwan, you may want to give Wulai a miss. The town is small with not so impressive attractions. But if you're in sceneries and brisk walking, you may like Wulai with its hundreds of steps.
Direction: To get to Wulai from Taipei Main Station, exit at Xindian. There's a visitor info kiosk there to assist you. You can either go by bus or taxi. taxi ride is around 40 minutes to Wulai Town, and it cost around NTD500 per way.
